Steven B. Smith is the Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science. His work has been in the history of political thought and contemporary political philosophy with a focus on the work of Spinoza, Hegel, Leo Strauss, and Isaiah Berlin. His major works include Hegel’s Critique of Liberalism, Spinoza on Liberalism and Jewish Identity, Spinoza’s Book of Life, Reading Leo Strauss, and most recently Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes. He was one of the founders of the Yale Program for the Study of Anti-Semitism and served as acting chair of Judaic Studies. He is a die-hard Yankees fan and is an aficionado of film noir.
