I am a philologist and historian studying texts and societies of the Near East of the period 200–1200 with special attention to the history of scholarship, the transition from Persian to Arab rule, and linguistic history. My research focuses on the interaction of different language communities and the translation of learned traditions between Arabic, Iranic languages, Aramaic, Greek, and Sanskrit. My home department at Yale is Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations. Students in Jewish Studies at Yale may find me to be a resource when studying the Sasanian and early Islamic contexts of the Babylonian Talmud, as well as Aramaic (including Syriac), Arabic, and Middle Persian languages and texts.
