Aron de Vries is a PhD student in History at Yale University focusing on Jewish History in the Islamicate world, particularly in the Maghreb. He is interested in questions of nationalism and identity in relation to experiences of modernity, as well as forms of intimacy and social connection in modern Jewish–Muslim contexts.
Before coming to Yale, Aron graduated from the University of Groningen with a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies. He spent time studying at the Dutch Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) and the Jewish Studies program at the University of Amsterdam before obtaining an M.A in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Groningen, with a thesis that dissected the pursuit of “moral alignment” with France in Protectorate-era Francophone Moroccan Jewish newspapers. During this Master’s program, he also worked as a research intern at Association Mimouna in Rabat, Morocco.
